Dr Pankaj Chandak is a transplant surgeon, researcher, and founder of the BBC Harmonies of Hope Transplant Children’s Choir. He is known for his work in paediatric kidney transplant surgery, including the use of 3D printing and machine perfusion technology to improve organ preservation. He is a specialist registrar in transplant surgery at Guy’s, St Thomas’, and Great Ormond Street Hospitals, and a research fellow at King’s College London.

Dr Pankaj’s key achievements were using a 3D model of an adult-sized kidney to plan a transplant for a child, which was later displayed at the Science Museum in London. His work with machine perfusion technology aims to preserve and repair organs outside the body, contributing to higher transplant success rates.

He has been honoured with numerous awards for his contributions to surgery and science, including the Royal College of Surgeons Lister Essay Prize, the Royal Society of Medicine Norman Tanner Medal, and the British Science Festival Charles Darwin Award. Dr Pankaj was awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons in 2023 for his work in 3D printing and machine perfusion for transplants.

Other recognitions include the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) Award for Innovation and Research, the Charles Darwin Award Lecture at the British Science Festival, and the Royal College of Surgeons Lister Prize and Medal in 2014.

In addition to his surgical work, Dr Pankaj has contributed to public engagement in science. He has delivered live demonstrations at the Royal Institution, the British Science Festival, and BBC platforms, focusing on topics such as 3D printing and organ perfusion. He also worked as a medical advisor and actor on the Netflix series The Crown, where he replicated a 1951 lung surgery performed on King George VI.

Dr Pankaj founded the Harmonies of Hope Transplant Children’s Choir, which supports children who have received kidney transplants. The choir is supported by funding from BBC Children in Need.

Dr Pankaj has lectured at events such as the Royal Society and the BBC World Service Forum. He is also a Fellow of several societies, including the Royal Asiatic Society, the Linnean Society, and the Royal Photographic Society.
